Podcasting in Higher Education

What is a Podcast?

Podcasts are simply audio and video content that you can subscribe to. Subscribing ensures you are notified when new content is available. Podcasts are easy to create and are an effective means of distributing rich educational materials.

Penn State provides support to help you get started, and several places to publish your podcasts, including Penn State on iTunes U and Blogs at Penn State.

Why Podcasting Works for Education

Podcasts are an effective educational tool for two reasons. First, people learn better when they experience information with multiple senses. Supplementing text with audio and video will help your audience remember your message.

Second, platforms like Penn State on iTunes U and Blogs at Penn State make it very easy for people to find and access this rich educational content. Removing obstacles allows students to get to the information they need quickly.

Who at Penn State is Podcasting?

Instructors are using podcasts to deliver course lectures, short weekly reviews of course material, conversations with experts in the field, and to incorporate numerous third-party resources into their courses.

Students are being asked to record presentations, reflect on course content, and conduct interviews with the local community, and they complete this work both individually and in teams.

Staff at Penn State can take advantage of podcasting to promote events and help students learn about the programs they offer.
